FIFA No. 3 Sweden crushes Italy 5-0 to advance to round of 16

Sweden has booked its place in the round of 16 at the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia-New Zealand 2023 with a convincing win over Italy.
Sweden cruised to a 5-0 victory over Italy in their second Group G match of the tournament on Monday at Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.
Riding a two-game winning streak, Sweden remained top of the group (6 points) and advanced to the Round of 16 regardless of the final result.
Sweden will play their final group game on August 2 against last-place Argentina (P1-G1, ?1-3).
Meanwhile, second-place Italy, who lost to Sweden to move to 1-1-1 (3 points), will face third-place South Africa (W-1-GD ?1-2) in their final match on the same day.
This is the first time in the tournament that the top two finishers in each group will advance to the round of 16.
Sweden, ranked No. 3 in the FIFA rankings, is a powerhouse that has qualified for all nine editions of the World Cup since its inaugural edition in 1991.
Their best result was a runner-up finish at the 2003 tournament, while they also finished third in 1991, 2011 and 2019.
They have also won two Olympic silver medals, in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Italy, ranked 16th in the FIFA rankings, have qualified for the knockout stages four times before this World Cup, reaching the quarterfinals in 1991 and 2019.
Sweden exploded for three goals in the first half to take an early lead.
Amanda Ilestedt opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Fridolina Rolfo followed in the 44th minute and Stina Blaxtonius in stoppage time to make it 3-0 at halftime.
Sweden put the game out of Italy's reach five minutes into the second half when Ilestedt completed her hat-trick.
With her second and third goals of the tournament, the goal-scoring defender moved into a tie for the tournament lead with Ari Borges (BRA).
