South Korea's management team of Hwang Sun-woo (20), Kim Woo-min (22), Yang Jae-hoon (25-over Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province) and Lee Ho-joon (22-Daegu Metropolitan City) got off to a flying start in their quest for their first ever World Aquatics Championships team medal. They breezed through the men's 800-meter freestyle relay preliminaries with a new Korean record.
South Korea set a new national record of 7:06.82 in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay preliminaries at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships on Monday at Fukuoka Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall in Fukuoka, Japan.
The team finished sixth overall out of 17 teams, punching their ticket to the finals, which are reserved for the top eight teams.
The 800-meter freestyle relay is an event in which four swimmers swim 200 meters each. Korea was assigned to lane 6 of heat 2 and raced in the order of Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min, Yang Jae-hoon, and Lee Ho-joon.
Hwang Sun-woo, the No. 1 swimmer, took the lead at the 100-meter mark, but was overtaken by the competition and handed over the baton in sixth place.
Kim Woo-min, the No. 2 swimmer, stood out. Woo Min Kim bounced back to take 5th, 4th, and 3rd place.
Yang Jae-hoon, the third youngster, slipped to fourth and fifth, but Lee Ho-joon, the last youngster, made a spurt and touched the touchpad third behind the USA (7:06.07) and Great Britain (7:06.20).
The team broke the Korean record with a time of 7:06.82. They shaved 0.11 seconds off their previous best of 7:06.93 from last year's Budapest final.
This is the team's second consecutive final appearance in Budapest. South Korea finished a career-best sixth in the final after qualifying fourth a year ago. Hwang broke the Korean record twice, running 7:08.49 in the prelims and 7:06.93 in the final.
The team, which relied on one lone star in Hwang, has become competitive in a short period of time. High-intensity training in Australia earlier this year saw Hwang, as well as Kim Woo-min, Yang Jae-hoon and Lee Ho-joon, improve their performances and put them in a position to contend for a medal at the World Championships.
Korean business has only ever medaled in individual events at the World Championships.
Park Tae-hwan won gold in the 400-meter freestyle and bronze in the 200-meter freestyle in Melbourne in 2007, and again in Shanghai in 2011.
Hwang won a silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle at Budapest 2022 and a bronze in the same event a year later in Fukuoka.
Hwang, Kim Woo-min, Lee Ho-joon and Yang Jae-hoon will look to make history in Fukuoka by winning a medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay. The 800-meter freestyle relay final will take place at 9:40 p.m. on the same day.
Meanwhile, Lee Eun-ji (Bangsango) qualified for the semifinals of the women's 200-meter backstroke.
Lee Eun-ji clocked 2:11.78 in the women's 200m backstroke preliminaries to finish 14th out of 41 swimmers and book her ticket to the semifinals.
It was Lee's first qualification in an individual event at the Games. She had previously failed to qualify in the 50m and 100m heats, finishing 19th (28.40) and 18th (1:00.56), respectively.
Lee also shared a Korean record of 3:47.09 in the 400-meter medley relay with Choi Dong-yeol (Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province), Kim Young-beom (Gangwon Chego) and Heo Yeon-kyung (Bangsan University) in the team event on Saturday.
In the men's 100-meter butterfly preliminaries, Kim Young-bum finished 31st in 52.80.
Ji Yoo-chan (Daegu Metropolitan Government) swam the men's 50m freestyle preliminaries in 22.17, just 0.01 seconds behind the Korean record held by Yang Jae-hoon (22.16), 카지노사이트 but was eliminated in 24th place. The cutoff for the semifinals was 22.05.
